Turing competition

The maths department at Manchester University recently launched a new competition tied in with the release of The Imitation Game, the film about Alan Turing that you have no doubt heard of.

The competition involves decrypting three codes. I thought it was quite fun, if not particularly difficult. Here’s the link.

A new trailer for the film came out a couple of weeks ago. I’m quite looking forward to this. Hope it doesn’t disappoint.

Solving the clues is quite fun.
I am currently stuck at the second one. You seem to have solved this. Can you give me a hint please.

      Hi Elaine.

There are (I think) 30 different symbols in the ciphertext, which is more than the number of letters in the alphabet. What do you suppose this could this indicate?

I have no clue how to solve 2. I need a clue or I am giving up. I have tried every word from the map and am not sure what to do from here.

  5. pash says:

Phil, have you managed to solve it?

  6. pash says:

Nooo!! thats in ages! we need another clue! Do I have to solve 3 first? what word should i look for? Is it on the map? Do I need to use a computer to solve it? do I need to wait till dawn and then hold it up to the light?

Please could you give a bit more of a clue regarding the relevance of there being 30 symbols?

could you at least tell us what type of cipher/code it is? please :>
